From the hill-top views of Bower's Tower to the colonial grandeur of Mapo Hall — a city that rewards every kind of traveller.
Ibadan is the largest city in Nigeria by area and one of the most historically significant in West Africa. Founded in the 1820s as a war camp, it grew into a major Yoruba commercial and military centre, and later became the capital of Nigeria's Western Region.
Today Ibadan is a living museum of colonial architecture, traditional markets and Yoruba culture. Its seven hills give the city a distinctive skyline of brown corrugated-iron rooftops, and its landmarks — Mapo Hall, Bower's Tower, Cocoa House, the University of Ibadan — draw visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.
Built in 1929, this colonial-era city hall sits at the crest of Mapo Hill overlooking the oldest part of Ibadan. A centrepiece of every heritage tour.
A 19th-century stone tower standing 60 feet tall atop Oke Are Hill, offering panoramic views across the city's iconic brown-roofed skyline.
Built in 1965 and once the tallest building in Nigeria, Cocoa House was funded entirely by proceeds from the Yoruba cocoa trade.
Nigeria's first university, established in 1948. Its botanical gardens and museum are open to visitors.
A 1,000-hectare tropical rainforest reserve within the city. Home to canopy walkways, botanical gardens, fishing lakes and rare species.
