Governor Seyi Makinde has officially announced the free allocation of 540 newly constructed ultra-modern shops to traders at Bodija Market, including facilities within the market’s motor park section. The governor also renamed the market’s new facilities in honour of the Babaloja of Bodija Market, Alhaji Sunmaila Aderemi Jimoh, recognizing his leadership and contributions to the market.
The commissioning ceremony, held in Ibadan, marked a major milestone in the redevelopment of one of Oyo State’s busiest commercial hubs. The project covers both the core market area and the adjoining motor park, which is crucial for transporting goods and passengers efficiently.
Free Allocation to Support Traders
Governor Makinde stated that the 540 shops are being allocated free of charge, particularly to traders affected by past disruptions. He explained that removing financial barriers would allow beneficiaries to quickly resume business operations and stabilize their livelihoods.
“I am here because of you traders that would be using these facilities. There are 540 stalls and none of you would pay any dime for any of them. Also, I want to urge you to try as much as possible not to move to the roadside again. Everybody should go into their shops, because there is enough space to accommodate everybody,” the governor said.
He further revealed that traders currently operating on the other side of the Bodija–UI Road would be relocated to another set of ultra-modern shops and motor park facilities within six months. The governor added that the expansion site could accommodate up to three times the current capacity and directed the local government chairman to execute the relocation project within the stipulated period.
Modern Infrastructure and Improved Safety
The rebuilt market and motor park feature modern structures, improved drainage systems, organized shop layouts, better ventilation, and enhanced safety standards. The motor park component is designed to provide a structured loading and offloading system, reducing congestion and improving overall efficiency.
The redevelopment was executed under the supervision of the Oyo State Government as part of broader urban renewal and economic strengthening initiatives.
Market Leaders Applaud the Initiative
Alhaji Sunmaila Aderemi Jimoh, the Babaloja of Bodija Market, expressed gratitude to the governor for creating a conducive environment that eases business operations and discourages roadside trading. The Babaloja-General of Oyo State, Alhaji Yekeen Abbas, also thanked the governor, urging traders to make full use of the new facilities.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Hon. Seun Olufade, commended the governor for his unwavering commitment to people-centered governance. He highlighted that the relocation of traders from the roadside to safe, well-structured shops reflects the administration’s dedication to improving livelihoods and economic opportunities for residents.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by top state officials including the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal; the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin (represented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi); former Speaker, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu; members of the House and local government executives; as well as commissioners, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and labour union representatives.

With the free allocation of 540 shops, the inclusion of the motor park, and the recognition of market leadership through the renaming, Bodija Market is set to regain its status as a major commercial hub.
