To mark this Golden Jubilee, the Oyo State Government announced a series of landmark events. The unveiling of a State Hall of Fame headlines the celebration. This monument will immortalize the men and women who defined the state’s legacy over the last half-century.
Under Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership, the celebration goes beyond looking back at 1976. Instead, it honors the resilience, culture, and brilliance that make Oyo State the political capital of the Southwest.
Etched in Gold: The Hall of Fame
For decades, heroes from Oyo State have shaped Nigeria’s history. They span the realms of politics, literature, science, and commerce. Yet, a singular, unified place to honor them never existed.
However, that changes this week. The government is set to unveil the Oyo State Hall of Fame. The planning committee describes this project as a “temple of history.”
The Golden Jubilee Schedule
The government has rolled out a robust itinerary. It ensures the celebration touches every zone, from Ibadan to Ogbomoso, Oke-Ogun, Oyo, and Ibarapa.

- Monday, January 26: Opening Ceremony. Official declaration by H.E. Governor Seyi Makinde at the International Conference Centre, UI.
- Tuesday, January 27: Health Outreach and Film Show
- Wednesday, January 28: Anniversary Carnival Walk. From Mapo Hall to Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan
- Thursday, January 29: Anniversary Symposium. Theme: “Consolidating the Legacy: Navigating the Present and Reimagining the Future.”
- Friday, January 30: Jumat Thanksgiving Service. Special prayers at the Central Mosque.
- Saturday, January 31: Isese Service (Traditional Worship) and Novelty Football Match
- Sunday, February 1: Christian Thanksgiving Service. A special interdenominational service will dedicate the state’s future to God. And an afternoon with the Elderly and PLWD
- Monday, February 2: School Visitation & Gift Presentation by the Wife of the Governor, Women Empowerment & Celebration.
- Tuesday, February 3 (THE GRAND FINALE): Golden Jubilee Gala & Award Night honoring our Heroes past and present at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan
A Journey from 1976
General Murtala Muhammed’s military regime created Oyo State on February 3, 1976. It was carved out of the old Western State. Despite the separation of Osun State in 1991, Oyo retains its status as the political nerve center of the Yoruba nation.
As the state turns 50, the narrative shifts from “ancient history” to “modern innovation.” With recent infrastructure upgrades like the Circular Road, the Golden Jubilee serves as the launchpad for the next 50 years.
